A NOTE FROM OUR PRODUCER The Rose Tattoo, a fascinating play, is an early work of Tennessee Williams in which his closely observed study of the dressmaker Serafina Delie Rose a New Orleans Sicilian immigrant is ideal theatrical material. We are wholly absorbed by this woman's approach to life, her religious super¬stition and instinctive reaction to physical love. After her truck driver husband's sudden death, Serafina bereft of her reason for existence, goes to pieces only rousing herself to, meddle in her adolescent daughter's love affair. While she is convinced of her late husband's faithfulness the Urn containing his ashes has its rightful place in her eyes at the feet of the Madonna, but when ultimately she learns the truth about her hus¬band's waywardness, the Urn is shattered and she falls into the arms of Alvaro the simple minded stranger. The film of the Rose Tattoo proclaimed the Italian actress Anna Mangani to the world. Burt Lancaster played opposite her as the truck driver. LUCY MITCHELL. OUR PRODUCER.
